7.30 am, the boutique opens, the first customer is stepping in. I quickly check my skirt, wear the first smile of the next 8 hours and walk in his direction. He's talking on the phone, nervously. His eyes scan the shelves and find a notebook he apparently likes. while talking he turns to me and asks for the price with a quick gesture. While I reply with a gesture, too, I cannot help but listen to his conversation. He's upset because the person on the other end of the line apparently is unable to cope with his speed of thought.
I put the notebook aside and show him, still with gestures, a pencil and a rubber suggesting a combination. He smiles and drops his credit card on the desk. I cash, wrap his purchase as a gift, put it in a bag and hand it over to him. He leaves. I stare at his back when a promotional ad I lately read comes to my mind: "Connectivity brings people closer".
